Sherry during her ECT treatment

Sherry was ill and was not getting any better, in fact she was getting slowly worse little by little. The doctors were all running short of new ideas and new therapies or new drugs to try. There was mention of a treatment called Elecro Convulsive Therapy.

I must admit I never wanted sherry to have this treatment, I did not approve of it and had researched the dangers and benefits of it.

This is the part of sherry's treatment that really confuses me. Sherry was under a section, that means she was in a confused mental state and needed protecting from herself. Surely while someone is in this self destructive state they are not in the best position to make informed decisions about potentially harmful medical proceedures. Here is the sting - Sherry was allowed to sign for ECT even though all her family were against it!

Sherry had around eighteen sessions of ECT treatment thinking all the time that the next session would make her well again. It never did.
